History of the Floresta da Tijuca
By the 19th century, the Atlantic Forest had almost disappeared due to deforestation. In 1861, Emperor Dom Pedro II ordered its reforestation to protect the city's water sources. In 1961, the Tijuca Forest officially became part of the Tijuca National Park and was placed under protection.
